Why I Write…

Joy is an act of resistance
— Toi Derricotte, The Telly Cycle (2011)

I’m a few articles deep into The Tamarah Diaries, and I thought it was time to share why I decided to start this blog in the first place. For starters, I love to write, but I never used to. However, it was something I was always good at. So much so that I remember my first-grade teacher telling my mom I would be an author one day. That has always stuck with me, but I could never find the joy in it. I think pursuing English as my college major changed it for me. I’ve always loved fashion, but I knew designing wasn’t for me. I didn’t know how to apply my skills to the industry until now. That’s what this blog is about. While at the moment this is just for fun and a way to build community, this is how I envision bringing my two passions together as a career. This is why it took me up until this point to see the beauty in writing. I can write what I want, not what is expected of me. I have a lot to share with the world, and for the longest time, I let fear get in the way. This is me overcoming that.

The Tamarah Diaries is a lifestyle blog. For the most part, it’s a light-hearted place where we can chit-chat about fashion, travel, beauty, you name it. But when I can find the words, I want to highlight important topics. I am passionate about social issues, and while this isn’t a large platform in any way, shape, or form, I know that all it takes is one person to make a difference. We are living in a time where our education is in jeopardy due to erasure in our systems. I believe that as a creative, it is critical to utilize your art in an impactful way. With that being said, I am human, and my goal is to always speak on topics to the best of my ability. If I make a mistake, please know I am always learning and working to do better with each article.

I know we are in trying times, and I would love to feature prominent figures and moments in history as a way to bring some encouragement for us all, specifically within the fashion industry. Fashion has a connection with history that I find fascinating, and I think it will be a great way for us to make sense of things in any way we can. I hope that no matter the topic, my blog is inspiring and thoughtful, even if I’m just talking about shoes.

As I said in my “Welcome!” article, if you’re reading this and you enjoy my content, send me some recommendations on what you would like to see from me. Writer’s block is a thing, and it’s not fun, so if there’s anything that interests you, let me know.
